It’s super simple to plug in your self-fit box – just follow these 3 steps.

3. Plug your self-fit box into your OBD port by pressing firmly until the box is securely in place

You’ll get an email to let you know if this was successful and whether we’re receiving data from the box correctly. This may take up to 24 hours - so don’t worry if it doesn’t come through straight away.

What’s an OBD port?

An OBD, or an on-board diagnostics port if you like to be fancy, is a technical term for a socket in your car that can give out data on how the car’s performing. But we’re only interested in the how you’re driving bit.

  • I can’t find the 12v socket in my car

    It’s usually in the front console area but if you’re not sure where your 12v socket is, just check your cars handbook.
  • My self-fit box doesn’t fit in the port in my car

    If you’ve checked that there’s no debris or any obstruction stopping the self-fit box being pushed in fully, then give us a call on 0333 2309 272 and we’ll talk you through what to do next. If your OBD port is faulty we may look to arrange for you to have a fitted black box instead.

    If you’ve checked that there’s no debris or any obstruction stopping the self-fit 12v being pushed in fully, then give us a call on 0333 2309 272 and we’ll talk you through what to do next. If your 12v socket is faulty we may look to arrange for you to have a different self-fit box.

  • I can’t find the OBD port in my car

  • What do I do with my self-fit box if I take my car on holiday abroad?

    It’s part of your insurance to have a working box in the car so you’ll need to leave your self-fit box plugged in while you’re on holiday.
  • What should I do with the self-fit box if my insurance is cancelled by ingenie?

    Once your insurance has been cancelled, just place the self-fit box in an envelope (we’ll pay the postage) and post the box back to us. All you need to do is:

    • Place the box inside an envelope or original packing
    • Write the Freepost return address on the front: Freepost TRAKM8
    • Pop your box in your local post box
  • What should I do with the self-fit box if I cancel my insurance?

    Once you’ve cancelled your insurance, just pop your self-box in an envelope (we’ll pay the postage) and post the box back to us. All you need to do is:

    • Place the box inside an envelope or original packing
    • Write the Freepost return address on the front: Freepost TRAKM8
    • Pop your box in your local post box
  • What happens if my self-fit box is damaged during a service, MOT or repair?

    If you think the garage may have damaged or interfered with your self-fit box, you should give us a call on 0333 2309 272 as soon as you get the car back so we can check to make sure the box is still sending us a signal. If your car has been in the garage and you think it may have affected your driving feedback, you can let us know the details on the garage form and we’ll take a look for you.

  • Can I unplug the self-fit box before my insurance ends?

    Having a box in your car is part of ingenie’s insurance, so you need to keep your box active as long as you’re insured with us. Unplugging or interfering with the self-fit box may mean we have to cancel your policy.
  • How do I know my self-fit box is working?

    OBD

    When you plug in your self-fit OBD box, a red LED light will flash. This shows it’s working. Once you’ve plugged in your self-fit box and we’re receiving a signal, you’ll receive an email asking you to set up your driving feedback account. If you haven’t received this email it may be a sign that something’s wrong, and you should give us a call to check on 0333 2309 272.

    12v

    When you plug in your ingenie 12v box into your 12v socket (blue tip first), press firmly until it’s securely in place. After a few seconds you should see a green ring on top of the box to let you know it’s connected. Then turn on your ignition for a couple of minutes to make sure your socket has power. You’ll then receive an email asking you to set up your feedback account. If you haven’t received this email it may be a sign that something’s wrong, and you should give us a call to check on 0333 2309 272.

  • I plugged in my self-fit box but the light didn’t come on

    If you’ve checked that the self-fit box is securely plugged into the port (and there’s no debris or an obstruction stopping this being pushed in fully) then give us a call on 0333 2309 272 and we’ll check whether it’s sending us a signal.
