Free MOT text reminders
Raise your hand if once a year you find yourself scrabbling under your bed or the back of your wardrobe, desperately trying to find evidence of your last MOT date.
Well, GOV.UK have just taken away that stress by introducing text and email reminders.
Our prayers have been answered.
How do I get a reminder?
Head over to gov.uk/mot-reminder with your car registration, mobile number or email address. You can choose how you'd prefer to get your reminder.
If you choose text reminders, you'll be sent a 6-digit code straight away to enter online and you'll get a confirmation text when you're all signed up.
One month before your MOT is due you’ll get your reminder and if you still haven't had your car tested 2 weeks before the MOT date, you'll get another. Because quite frankly, one reminder is never enough.
If you've sold, scrapped or registered the car as off road, you can unsubscribe from the reminders using the instructions in the text or email.
REMEMBER: You can be fined up to £1,000 for driving a car that doesn't have a valid MOT.
Don't leave it
The new reminder service has been set up after DVSA figures showed more than a quarter of Britain's cars are overdue vital road safety checks. 28% of cars are late for their MOT and two-thirds of those are at least 7 days out of date. Not good.
We all need a gentle nudge now and then but a word of advice: don't solely rely on technology.
Even if you can't remember exact dates you should always have a rough idea what time of year your MOT, tax and car insurance is due. As a driver it's your responsibility to keep things up to date - blaming your forgetfulness on a missing text isn't going to let you off.
