EU tackles car insurance gender discrimination

European Court of Justice

At ingenie we feel that every driver should be treated as an individual and it looks like the European Court of Justice agrees.

As of 21st December 2012 insurers will no longer be allowed to use gender as a factor when calculating premiums. Whilst young females are statistically safer drivers than young males, as a result of this ruling, their premiums are set to rise.

So what do you think? Do you think the new rules are fairer?

We think that telematics technology is one way that young drivers, whatever their gender, can pay for their car insurance based on how well they drive - not based on the collective risk of all young drivers.
